About the event
The Gender in Dispute International Seminar is born out of the feminist and gender effervescence that marks the teaching, research and extension of the Federal University of ABC (UFABC), through the action of researchers, students, activists, teachers and all those interested in gender issues, sexualities, feminisms and women's studies.
By putting the theme “Gender in Dispute” on stage, this meeting aims to be a moment of reflection, critique and construction of possibilities for gender studies in the face of the challenges posed by the present time, seeking to find horizons and think about futures. The conception of the event is marked by a logic that guides the articulation between social movements and academia, proposing formats and spaces for shared and horizontal debates. With this we intend to create opportunities to foster and strengthen the field of gender studies at UFABC, but also to promote exchanges and dialogues with other institutions in Brazil and abroad.

Submission of abstracts
Gender is in dispute. It's a category that causes problems and generates controversy. On one hand, a whole political sector identified with the far-right, which is advancing quickly across the planet, believes that gender is part of what they call an ideology, a kind of lie that covers up the truth of a binary, heterosexual, patriarchal and colonial world. Feminist theories, queer/cuir theories, critical racial theories and radical proposals in general are the targets of the attacks from this political spectrum.
On the other hand, there is also no consensus within feminist theories, progressive and left-wing camps on what the category of gender means, what it implies or how it works. Nor, in some of these circles, are they given the attention and centrality that such issues occupy in people's concrete everyday lives. Modulated by disciplinary boundaries and various theoretical and political proposals, gender takes on different forms and definitions, as well as being associated with different problems and discussions.
It is amidst this backdrop of dispute that the need for dialogues, understandings and constructions around the meanings of gender becomes evident. In order to contribute to the collective construction of knowledge and strategies for struggle and resistance, the Esperança Garcia Gender Studies Center invites everyone to the 1st International Seminar Gender in Dispute, which will take place on August 4, 5 and 6, 2025 at the Federal University of ABC, São Bernardo do Campo campus.
